The day was gorgeous, the weather was arctic. With a windchill of -4 it was hard to stay warm, but the view was spectacular, the snow good, and the lift lines not too long.

Andorra - Soldeu

If your are a beginner and/or on a budget then this is the place for you.One of the largest ski areas in Austria the Skiwelt area lift pass offers value for money. The resorts of Soll, Brixenthal, Westerndorf are all linked here. The only downside for Ellmau is that you will find that you need to hop on a bus every morning to take you to the main funicular mountain rail train that whizzs you to the top of the main slopes. However the buses run every 10 minutes so you will not be waiting around too long. This is probably the case for the other resorts of Soll etc as well.&nbsp;The lifts are mainly chairlifts which is also good for beginners especially snowboarders. There are a few places to go for Apres in the afternoon and evenings. Bar 66 and Tapas bar are lively and busy and there is also a nightclub beneath Bar 66.

Austria - Ellmau

Until recently very few UK tour operators offered package deals here however, the year I went to Obertauern we stayed for 3 nights on a long weekend break which we organised ourselves.The transfer from Salzburg airport was only about a 1 hour by taxi (organized by the hotel).Obertuaern is a high altitude resort with no shortage of snow however it can suffer from the wind and whilst we were here we were greeted with extreme windy blizzard conditions which carried on into the night howling around the hotel. Thankfully the wind was gone by the morning and we able to enjoy great skiing with sunshine and blue skies. There are many runs to keep you occupied for a week and we managed to ski most in the 3 days we were here.There are also plenty of bars to enjoy Apres ski including the very popular outdoor umbrella bars (a familiar site in Austria and Italy). Head for the Latsch’n Alm and Lürzer Alm bars for the best party atmosphere.

Austria - Obertauern

For me St. Anton offered the best week in the Alps I have ever experienced.Everything here was faultless from the hotel, nightlife and skiing. This place is like “Ibiza in the snow” and it’s not hard to see why. The Apres scene here kicks off from about 3.30 in the afternoon with the 2 mountain restaurant bars Krazy Kanguruh and Mooserwirt the best places to head for with their “extraordinary party atmosphere” (and you will not be disappointed!). The music played here varies from euro trash to retro 80's rock and pop along with some modern day tunes.&nbsp;Once you have survived the intoxicated run back down into the town (hopefully without bashing into anyone) you will find more bars pumping out some more mainsteam dance tunes. It almost persuedes you to want to skip dinner and carry on into the night.&nbsp;If you are on a self catering or bed and breakfast basis, there are a variety of restaurants to eat out each night. You will find everything from steak houses, pizza, Tex Mex

Austria - St Anton

The worlds number 1 ski resort, Whistler remains my favorite destination for skiing. Year after year it boasts some of the best snow conditions found in the world and there is certainly never any shortage of it here. The ski area here covers Blackcombe mountain and Whistler mountain and since my last visit in 2006 they have built a brand new gondola that links both mountains in readiness for the Winter Olympic games being hosted here in 2010.

Canada - Whistler

There is a great deal of skiing on offer here with the lift pass allowing you to ski the neighboring &nbsp; resort of Les Deux Alpes. For the more experienced of you I recommend trying the black run 16 Sarenne off the top cable car station Pic Blanc at 3,330m. This is a 16 km run all the way down to the bottom of the valley. If your not a keen black run skier, don’t be put off by the black rating as I found the hardest part was the first run off from the top. It starts off as a steep mogul run of about 100m then after you have conquered this part you will be fine. This can also be a little busy especially after the cable car has disembarked it’s passengers and probably best to wait for the crowds to go off first. Whilst you are waiting there is fantastic opportunity to take some pictures of the spectacular views across the Alps

France - Alpe D'Huez

Val Thorens is part of the 3 Valleys ski area which also covers the resorts of Meribel, La Tania and CourchevalObviously there is plenty on offer here for the hardcore skiers and snowboarders amongst and you won’t be disappointed. Beware of the last lift times when heading out across to Meribel or Courcheval as you don’t want to risk being stranded in another valley and faced with an expensive taxi ride home. Plus rushing back for the last lifts with tired legs is a no no. Leave yourselves with plenty of time in hand.As Val Thorens is the highest of the resorts in the 3 Valleys, the lift queues can easily become very busy if snow conditions are lacking in depth further down in Meribel and La Tania as many skiers staying at these resorts will head up here for the day.If for example you are a beginner and you know that you are not likely to use the other resorts in the area to ski, there is a lift pass which is limited to the Val Thorens area only. This is a good idea to purchase and it’s cheaper.

France - Val Thorens

Italy - Bormio

Wengen is a very traditional and unspoiled resort and is accessed only by train.

You won’t find any cars up here as it is a traffic free resort. Getting up the mountain you are limited to either the cable car or mountain train. Some people may prefer to take the cable car each morning as the train will take about 20 minutes to reach the top station Kleine Scheidegg at the foot of the Eiger. Here (if you fancy a day off from skiing) you can take the Jungfraujoch mountain train up to the highest station in Europe at the top of the Jungfrau where you will find a restaurant and some amazing ice caves and spectacular views. NOTE: your lift pass will not cover this train journey and the fare was about 50 Swiss francs.

Wengen and Grindalwald have sledge runs alongside the pistes. You can hire the sledges from most sport shops in the town.

One thing you will notice is that Swiss trains REALLY do run like clockwork and they will move on the precise second they are due to leave.

Switzerland - Wengen

The week I stayed in Verbier, our party stayed in a catered chalet. The food we had here was fantastic however my only gripe about the chalet was that the beds were too small (for my 6ft 1 frame) and I felt like I was sleeping in a dolls bed (hopefully this is not the case anywhere else in Verbier). The boot room was not heated either and therefore we had damp feet on the first few mornings so instead I kept my boots in my room next the radiator after that and did not suffer cold feet anymore.

There is a lot of skiing on offer here and challenging too. On one of the runs there is what is known as ‘The Wall’ and when you look over the top and see how steep it is you will get the idea why it has that name. Not only is it steep but it also has moguls everywhere. We attempted the descent only the one time as it took us so long and thereafter for the rest of the week we took the easy option and took the gondola down to the bottom of this slope.

Good for snowboarders but not really recommended for beginner skiers

Switzerland - Verbier

Breckenridge is a traditional wild west cowboy town originally a mining town. The air here is very thin as the resort is at 3,000 meters and if you're not careful you can easily find yourself gasping for breath just from walking down the street. Getting here is relatively easy with many transatlantic flights from UK airports but not all fly direct to Denver. So try if you can to find a direct flight as getting a connecting flight in the US can add hours to your journey. I flew with British Airways from Heathrow on my last visit in 2000. The skiing here is plentiful and superb with wide open tree-lined runs. The lift pass although pricey allows you to also ski in Keystone, Arapahoe Basin, Copper Mountain and Vail. The pass also covers the bus to transport you there. In order to get the most out of your holiday, I would recommend coming here for a 10/11 night stay rather than 7 days. Firstly it gives you a chance to recover from jet lag and secondly, there is so much skiing on offer
